Academic Accommodations - Useful Teaching Techniques
The following are examples of useful teaching techniques for specific disability-related accommodations that students and faculty have used successfully. Contact C. Fitzgerald by e-mail or at ext. 2129 for additional ideas.
ADD/ADHD
- Present information clearly and consistently
- Use multi-modal teaching format
- Provide outlines, study guides
- Reinforce concepts on blackboard & w/overheads
- Use e mail for assignments, communications
- Provide seating options near front of class, away from windows, open doors
Blindness
- Verbal descriptions of visual aids
- Audio taped, Brailed or electronic formatted lecture notes, texts
- Adaptive equipment (talking calculators, voice output computers)
- Testing alternatives with reader & scribe
Hearing Impaired
- Sign language interpreter, FM System, note taker
- Use of visual aids, open or closed captioned films
- Written assignments, demonstration summaries, lab instructions
- Use of e mail for class and private discussions
- Face class when speaking. Repeat discussion questions before answering
Learning Disability
- Audio taping of class sessions
- Extra time for assignments, exams
- Alternate testing arrangements in quiet space, with reader, and/or scribe
- Computer with voice output, spell and grammar check
- Assess essential skills via conceptual test vs. True/False or Multiple Choice
Mobility
- Classrooms moved to accessible location
- Notetaker/lab assistant
- Class assignments made available in electronic format and e-mail
- Flexible attendance requirements and extra exam time
- Computer equipment with special input devices
