Fall 2008 Newsletter

  Autumn

An Autumn's Greetings

Welcome everyone to the Fall Psychology Newsletter. The year is getting off to a rapid new start. We hope everyone is getting adjusted to their new schedules. We have new Undergraduate and Graduate Psychology Students starting the school from various places. We have four international Graduate Students: Kishor Adhikari from Nepal, Sharon Selvaraj from Southern India, Prateeksha Scott from Northern India, and Mike Lasaro from Botswana. We are blessed to train and educate these students in Counseling and Clinical Skills to take back to their countries.

We are also in the process of constructing a Mirror Counseling Lab for our new graduate training course. We are in the last stages of getting the Bethany University Counseling Center approved where our second year graduate students will have the opportunity to gain hours for their practicum and act as a resource to the community. The BU Counseling Center will also benefit the undergraduate students with low cost services. More information about the Counseling Center will be forth coming.

We are really excited about the new school year and are thrilled for everyone that have and will play a part of the Undergraduate and Graduate Program.

In God' s Love,
Julie Carboni

Bethany University Counseling Center

The Psychology Department here at Bethany University is please to announce that we are opening a Counseling Center on campus. With the various demands and stressors of both the students' academic and personal life, Bethany University is committed to offering undergraduate students with the opportunity to participate in counseling.

The Bethany University Counseling Center offers individual, family, marital and couples' counseling, that covers a wide range of personal issues and circumstances.

We are located in the Vickery Center, at the bottom of Bethany Drive, and are proximally accessible to students on the main campus, as well as the neighboring communities.

Our counselors have been trained with the necessary skills to offer counseling services, support, and appropriate assessments and referrals in order to meet the needs of the students and the general public. Traditional Bethany students will be offered three (3) free counseling sessions each semester and (6) premarital. The Counseling Center offers an adjusted rate fee for those continuing services and others in the community.

Please contact the Counseling Center at 831-438-3800 ext. 3961 or email us at Counseling@fc.bethany.edu.

Bethany's Most Wanted

 Most Wanted 1

It was a humorous opening to a new academic year for both the staff and students at Bethany. The staff from our department decided they would adorn themselves in Indian fashion hoping to put a shadow on their appearance. The students were to try and recognize the staff, with the help of a small stamp size black and white photo print of each person. The hardest part for the staff was keeping a straight face as the students approached with quizzical looks, and hoping their demeanor would cover up their last ray of hope in being unrecognized.

ALL SCHOOL BARBECUE

BBQThe Psychology Dept. would like to thank all the students and staff that helped during our All-School Barbecue at the beginning of the school year.

This was a great time for the new students to meet their mentors, share their goals and ideas, and even learn from different people's perspectives and expectations of the new school year.

BBQ

While the initial apprehension faded, and when the air became more relaxed, the small get together was brought to an end with a little speech by the Graduate Program Director, Prof. Julie Carboni, who introduced all the staff and their areas of expertise. Overall it was a great start to the Fall Semester and was an example of what is yet to come.

Everyone from the Psychology Department would like to greatly appreciate those who took part in organizing the barbecue:

BBQLinda Timm: who donated many materials and helped set-up the event.

Our two wonderful Cooks: Prof. Emmanuel Denike and Tim Carboni,

And others include Isaiah Moreno, Trudy Fergusson, Professor. Julie Carboni, Sharon Selvaraj.
