Summer 2008 Newsletter

Summer's Greetings
The Psychology Department here at Bethany University wishes you a safe and happy summer this year as we say farewell to the graduating cohort and welcome to the new class for the fall of 2008. As many of you know the Psychology Department has been going through a number of changes this summer and is adapting to these changes well. We are working hard in the office in preparation for a great new year!
The winner of our 2008 Merit Scholarship is our top applicant: Katie Malloy
First we would like to congratulate this year's Merit Scholarship Winner: Katie Malloy. The Merit scholarship is awarded to the applicant who has exhibited superior character through her volunteer and academic work.
Katie grew up in Paso Robles, CA, but has recently moved from the Monterrey area up here to Scott's Valley. She obtained her Bachelors degree in Collaborative Health and Human services initially wanting to be a social worker.
When asked why Bethany? Katie responds, “I really liked the mission statement and the purpose. It’s important—the sound theology on top of learning about psychology and relationships.”
When asking about her hobbies she says, “I like to go out to coffee shops with friends, bible studies, and hikes. I like tennis, and just encouraging people.” When talking to Katie about her future goals she responded, “eventually I hope to go into missions and be a part of an orphanage, possibly in Africa.”
CONGRATULATIONS KATIE!!!
UNDERGRADUATE PSYCHOLOGY FAIR
This years Psychology Fair was a huge success with special speakers, impressive presentations, and a close competition between all the psychology classes that presented. We want to congratulate all the undergraduate psychology classes and many of the hard working individuals for their participation in this event. We had a great turn out and special thanks to the following:
Seniors Bridget Gallup and Kristen Classen for their senior thesis presentations
Masters student Sarina Ocanas for presenting on her Final Project Case Study
Professors Julie Carboni and Emmanuel Denike for all their hard work!
Also Special Congratulations to the HUMAN SEXUALITY Class presentation who won first place by two points over the Abnormal Psychology class.
Everyone did an amazing job this year.
STUDENT HIGHLIGHTS
Each newsletter the psychology department likes to highlight one of our Graduate students to let you get better acquainted with them. We are honored to highlight Angie Hollerman.
During the last academic year Angie has undergone major difficulties and celebrations. With the death of her mother in february and her recent marriage to former Bethany student Jeremy Sprawling, she has undergone and triumphed through such milestones.
Angie was originally born in North Carolina and have lived in many places throughout her childhood such as southern California and Sequium, WA. In her 20's she moved up north to the Santa Cruz area and has become well acquainted to the Santa Cruz culture.
When asked "Why Bethany University" Angie replies "I heard good things about the school and I really wanted something small and personal. I had been praying about it and I really liked the Christian community and being closer to home."
Angie started in the original cohort in 2005 and has managed to balance her school work with her current full time job at the University of California Santa Cruz. There she works with students who have different types of learning disabilities. Angie is planning to finish this year and continue to work
From everyone here in the psychology department Best of Wishes to the newly weds!

Kim and her husband have moved to Vancouver, WA to be closer to family and friends. Jo has decided to explore some international occupational opportunities, as well as, work as a clinical supervisor. From everyone here in the psychology department—Good Luck. We will miss you Kim and Jo!!!
