Graduage Program Completion

If a student remains continuously enrolled, they have four years to complete the Master of Arts. Students who have not completed the program after four years of continuous enrollment must submit to the Graduate Council an appeal for additional time in the program which includes a proposed timeline for program completion. If California Commission on Teacher Credentialing requirements change during the time the student is enrolled, candidates will also have to meet those new requirements.

Students who have not completed their credential requirements or MA requirements and have not been enrolled in classes for a year or more must reapply to the program. The Graduate Council will review their file and determine their eligibility for readmittance. If California Commission on Teacher Credentialing requirements or program requirements change during the time the student is not enrolled, candidates will have to meet those new requirements. The Graduate Council will determine what coursework will be accepted, must be retaken, or what additional coursework or field work/student teaching must be completed.

Program Description

The Teacher Education Program at Bethany is approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) to recommend qualified candidates for a Multiple-Subject (essentially for elementary school) or Single Subject (essentially junior and senior high) teaching credential. Present California requirements are subsumed under the Ryan Act, or the Teacher Preparation and Licensing Law of 1979, the Hughes-Hart Reform Act of 19483 (SB-813), and the Teacher Education Bergeson Act of 1988 (SB-148). Bethany's programs, developed to address the various legislative guidelines, are designed to provide students with the subject-matter competence and professional coursework required by the CCTC. Selection for admission into the Teaching Credential Program requires two levels of admission. The applicant must first meet the criteria for admission to Bethany University cited below. Once the applicant is determined as having met those criteria, the TEP Graduate Council considers the applicant for selection into the Teaching Credential Program. This process includes consideration of the applicant's file and preassessment information. Selection into the Teaching Credential Program is based on the applicant's match with the program goals, the Bethany University environment, the Christian community, and the professional judgement of the applicant's success as a potential classroom teacher as stipulated by the requirements of the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

Applicant Selection

The Graduate Council conducts applicant selections as completed applications are received. Applications received following the priority deadlines will be considered on a "first come-first served" basis, or placed on a waiting list.
