Security Officer


Position Description

The Security Officer is responsible for patrolling the University campus and ensuring that the environment is safe and secure for students, faculty and staff. The security presence is intended to prevent potentially dangerous and unsafe situations before they happen. If such an incident occurs, the Security Officer is the first responder and will notify the appropriate personnel and agencies as necessary. The goal of this position is to enhance the experience of those on campus by making them feel protected and ensuring compliance with rules that are in place for the good of the community.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma.
  • Age 21 or older.
  • Valid California Guard Card
  • Minimum 1 year security experience.
  • CPR/First Aid certified.
  • Weapons permit not required but useful.
  • Background in OSHA and safety standards is preferred.
  • Military or Law Enforcement background helpful.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to stay calm in tense situations.
  • Service oriented.
  • Able to work nights and weekends.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Actively patrols campus checking for fires, vandalism, suspicious activity or persons, safety/fire hazards and maintenance issues, reporting circumstances to the appropriate parties for correction or follow-up action
  • Assists the Director of Public Safety with overseeing access control on campus. This also includes, locking and unlocking buildings upon request or necessity.
  • Assists the Director of Public Safety with daily logs, monitoring the surveillance system, and conducting emergency drills.
  • Assists students, staff and emergency medical personnel in emergencies, or when otherwise appropriate or helpful. Responds to alarms and dispatched calls with professional and appropriate response
  • Assures that campus facilities are locked and unlocked at the appropriate times.
  • Enforces University code of conduct. This includes providing for a nightly sweep of residence hall lobbies to assure students of the opposite sex to exit buildings, alerting visitors of infractions, and escorting unwanted or disruptive visitors from university property when necessary, involving the SVPD as appropriate.
  • Monitors the surveillance system.     
  • Receives and responds to emergency calls.
  • Responsible for enforcement of university traffic and parking policies in conjunction with the Department of Public Safety.
  • Performs other duties and assignments as directed.

Salary / Compensation

This is an hourly, part time position of 32hrs/week.
